In 2010 ACA participated in the planning, bidding, and execution (ACA being responsible for the transportation of the equipment) of the design, build, and commissioning of two 10 MW diesel power plants in Kandahar City at the New Industrial Park and Russian Silo locations. Because of the tight timeline required by the client, ACA chartered 11 aircraft including Antonov 124, Boeing 747, and L100-30 Herc aircraft to move the total cargo load including gensets and the supporting fuel tanks, switchgears, cable, and maintenance equipment into Kandahar Airfield and then trucked to the site locations. ACA coordinated with carriers for the ISAF Callsigns (MRF) for the flights to allow access to warzone airspace and the PPR for ground handling and ramp space needs. The gensets used were 24 Caterpillar 3516B Gensets which weighed approximately 28 tons each. The tight slot and ramp times allowed at KDH Airfield for civilian aircraft, required an alternative to the full ramp system commonly used on the Antonov AN-124 aircraft for heavy pieces. By using 30ton crane attachments and bracing the gensets with wood for protection, we were able to load and unload the aircraft without the full ramp, significantly reducing our ground time, keeping compliance with KDH Airfield ramp time allowances. Chartered aircraft departed from New York (JFK), Stewart Airfield, Raleigh, Hannover Germany, and Ostend Belgium all arriving into KDH Airfield. Additional BOM was sent by commercial airfreight from the US and Europe saving the client the cost of additional air charters while still making our delivery deadlines. ACA coordinated to have trucks meet the aircraft plane side at Kandahar Airbase to quickly remove the cargo from the ramp area and move it to the construction sites exiting the airbase with cargo clearance under Memorandum Of Understanding. ACA Provided the client with up to date flight following information so they knew exactly where in the transportation process their equipment was and the project was completed on time and at the contracted amount.
